Wednesday afternoon

After lunch we traveled back up Michelangelo's stairs to the statue of Marcus Aurelius and followed Rick Steve's hidden route that took us to a cafe on the lower portion of the Victor Emmanuel Monument. From there we took an elevator to the very top of the monument for the best view of the city, even better than what the dome of St. Peter's has to offer.

Next we visited the Capitoline Museum. The statue I was most interested in is "The Dying Gaul".

It looks as though he was pierced with a bladed weapon just belle his right lung. A little scar can be seen with blood coming out.

Of course there were many famous artworks and statues like Venus the goddess of love.

And Minirva, the goddess of war.

From there we walked around the front of the Victor Emmanuel monument where the the tomb of the Italian unknown soldier from World War I.

Directly across the street was the famous Trajan's Column. The column has carvings detailing Emperor Trajan's conquests.

We then walked to the Colosseum where we rested our feet while having dinner and then headed back to the hotel.

  1. The Dying Gaul was the model for the Russell Crowe's character in the movie The Gladiator. You're welcome
